  ABOUT SUNTEC CITY
In 1984, Singapore’s then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, invited a select group of Hong Kong businessmen to visit and invest in Singapore. Demonstrating its commitment to Singapore’s future, the consortium, led by Tan Sri Frank Tsao, proceeded to develop Suntec City as a landmark of architectural excellence. The completion of this modern, vibrant and single largest integrated commercial development in 1997 was timely in taking Singapore forward into the 21st century.

  The Business Capital of Asia
Designed to be a ‘city within a city’ with 7 million square feet of space, Suntec city, is the single largest integrated commercial development in Singapore with five office towers, a shopping mall, an international convention and exhibition centre and a fountain all connected to each other by street level plazas, walkways and courtyards. The overall layout is well balanced and graceful, turning into Singapore’s landmark. No other development has integrated and harmonized such a wide range of conveniences in business services, information exchanges, networking opportunities or leisure activities to meet the evolving business challenges. Suntec City gives one the unparalleled advantage of achieving business success in “the Business Capital of Asia”.

Suntec (‘Xin Da’ in Chinese) means “new achievement”, representing a breakthrough achievement- furthering the frontiers of innovation, technology and creativity- as a quantum leap towards the future.

  Overall Layout
Viewed from the air, Suntec City is sculpted in the shape of a left hand. The six storey convention centre forms the wrist while the 18- storey office block beside it represents the thumb and the four 45-storey office towers symbolize the fingers. The shopping mall links all above into a complete unit. The Fountain, the largest in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records, forms the gold ring placed in the centre of the palm. Its perfect bronze circle symbolizes unending co-operation and unity, a powerful icon representing the spirit and strength of the tycoon shareholders’ unity.

Natural Wonders
Suntec City has harmonized functionality with nature, incorporating lush greenery to enhance the environment where people work and play. Inspired by the Suzhou Gardens in China, the complex features continuous groves of trees to provide shade and cool respite from the tropical climate. In addition to the 900 trees, climbers and flowering plants have been added to the roof areas to line the pedestrian walkways.

Open spaces provide contrast and relief with the towering buildings. Tenants can enjoy the tranquillity of the Bonsai Garden and Sky Garden and new tenants often release koi fish in the Koi Garden in a symbolic effort to enhance business success. Singing canaries and landscapes have also been introduced into the office lobbies and car park to create a relaxed and serene working environment.

  Place of Harmony
The use of Asian elements in inspiring the design of Suntec City demonstrates clearly the cultural sensitivity to the multi-cultural context of Singapore. The complex draws from powerful Asian symbols of Chinese feng shui and yin-yang and the Hindu mandala to create both harmony and good fortune for tenants.

Respecting the traditional principles of feng shui, the complex has been planned to harmonize with the physical world and the surrounding developments. According to the geomancy masters, Suntec city is well-placed for fortune and success. Following the descriptions laid out in the ancient Chinese oracle, the I-Ching, Suntec City is favourably aligned to the Dragon positions of the ‘Lake’ Hexagram on which City Hall, Supreme Court and other seats of authority rest. The positions of adjacent buildings provide further positive influences. Pan Pacific Hotel and Marina Square together form the diagram of ‘Lion’ at 104 degrees of the ‘Frugality’ Hexagram. Suntec City lies to their left, auspiciously positioned between the ‘Gathering’ and ‘Fulfilment’ Hexagrams.

The circular shape of the Fountain Plaza at the centre of the complex is based on the Hindu Mandala, which uses a circle to represent the universal spirit. The yin-yang balance of opposites is reflected in the juxtaposition of solid buildings and free space, in the balance of cool colours with warm earth tones and in the combination of metal and stone materials.
